2 . 1 Embedded menus : selecting items in context

چکیده
In many situations, embedded menus represent an attractive alternative to the more traditional explicit menus, particularly in touchtext, spelling checkers, language-based program editors, and graphics-based systems. When compared to command driven systems, computer menu systems are appealing because they reduce memorization of commands, reduce training, and structure the user's decision making. Menus can be categorized as either embedded or explicit (Koved, 1984), the difference being the context in which the menu items are presented.

Keyboard-Card Menus: A New Presentation of Non-Standard Shortcuts
“Keyboard-card menus” are a new type of menu system in which potentially hundreds of menu items are arranged in sets of keyboard patterns that are designed to be navigated using only a computer keyboard’s character keys, for fast access. In selecting items from these menus, novice users physically rehearse the same actions that an expert would use. We describe these menus and their potential ap...
متن کاملThe Design and Evaluation of Marking Menus
This research focuses on the use of hand drawn marks as a human-computer input technique. Drawing a mark is an efficient command input technique in many situations. However, marks are not intrinsically self-explanatory as are other interactive techniques such as buttons and menus. This research develops and evaluates an interaction technique called marking menus which integrates menus and marks...

We describe "marking menus", an extension of "pie menus" which makes . Pie menus are circular menus subdivided into sectors, each of which might correspond to a different command. Marking menus are pie menus in which the path of the cursor leaves an ink trail. Thus, selecting a sector from a marking menu creates a visual mark similar to a pen stroke on paper. متن کاملExpandable Indexes Versus Sequential Menus for Searching Hierarchies on the World Wide Web
An experiment is reported that compared expandable indexes providing full menu context with sequential menus providing only partial context. Menu depth was varied using hierarchies of 2, 3, and 4 levels deep in an asymmetric structure of 457 root level items. Menus were presented on the World Wide Web within a browser. Participants searched for specific targets. Results suggest that reducing th...
